It's like Duck Hunt, but without the cool zapper gun, alternate game modes and that funny-looking dog.

ShootOut!

Premise
ShootOut! is a very simple Java applet game. You must shoot all the ducks on the screen with your mouse before you run out of bullets or time. Every fifth level is rewarded with a bonus stage where you must take down wooden target men. The game gets much harder as you advance.

System Requirements
-Pentium 200 or better
-Java JDK/JRE 1.2.2 or later (NOT compatible with Microsoft JVM)
-A video card with 2D video acceleration is recommended

Motivation
So why would anyone want to make such a "crusty" and difficult game? The graphics are mediocre, the gameplay is unforgiving, and the concept has been done over a billion times. One simple reason: a test of time and effort. This game, in its entirety, was produced for a first-year programming course in less than three weeks-- learning new programming concepts, game design, system structure, implementation, graphics, testing, refinement and that wonderful lab report. Like most academic ventures, this was also created concurrently with other assignments.

Screenshots
Title screen Title screen.
ShootOut!'s title screen and all its bold and colourful glory. Notice the long line of bullets at the bottom of the screen. Feel pity for the duck that is about to get shot. :)

Level clear! Level clear!
As the level progresses, the number of ducks increase, their movement becomes more erratic, the number of available bullets decreases and your timer starts off with less time. Yes, it is a very unforgiving game.

Action shot. Action shot.
In the midst of a game. The birds can hide under the green foliage but that doesn't protect them from your muzzle. Take note, aim and shoot!
