Bringing a classic Quake 2 modification back to life.
Premise
Reaction Quake 3 (or simply known as "Reaction") is
essentially a direct-as-possible port of Action Quake 2 (AQ2)
to Quake 3: Arena. Reaction embodies the atmosphere of your
favourite action movies with realistic weapons, stylish maps,
movie-style physics and exciting gun battles.
System Requirements
Whatever is required to run Quake 3, such as:-Pentium 233 or better (Pentium 3 500+ recommended) -3D Graphics Card capable of supporting full OpenGL -Quake 3 installed and patched to the latest version (1.32) -About 100MB of free space (more for additional media) Motivation
Reaction was initially developed by a group of former
Action players. The premises was to revive the aging
modification and give it a graphical upgrade while
retaining the fast, frantic gameplay. Work started
around October 2000 and continues on today.
My personal motivation was simply to "give back" to the Action community. Having played Action for quite some time (and it is arguably my favourite "game" of all-time), Action has become a strong reference to what I considered a game built on functional gameplay and a strong player community. Reaction enabled me to achieve this and I worked on this project for almost two years. Contribution
My very first contribution was the actual
title for this project. After that,
my focus on Reaction was initially on the website
design and work as the webmaster (i.e. posting news
updates, maintaining site information, handling
incoming external relations, etc.). Later, the
project required some much-needed help in coding
and I proceeded to fix outstanding bugs and implement
a functional user interface (both in-code and for
much of the graphical assets). Things
progressed well and I eventually became the defacto
lead programmer for several months. Version 1 was released
on November 16, 2001. Since then, I stepped down
as lead coder to concentrate on academic studies but
assisted in additional patches and revisions. By mid-2002,
my work with Reaction was essentially complete. The
project continues with a brilliant group of
programmers, players, artists, et al.
Work Log
I maintained a work log detailing my
accomplishments for the bulk of my Reaction
programming. You can view the project's changelog
here and the original text file I
kept here.
